It is also the day Archbishop Oscar Romero was born in 1917. His life and choice to stand against oppression ended in his assassination on 24 March 1980. A very good source of information is the well organised and vibrant site of the UK based Archbishop Romero Trust where copies of Romero's homilies can be sourced, view pictures in the gallery and just a few months ago (May 2013)the digitised recordings of an audio diary were made available along with printed transcripts in both Spanish and English via the site.
Romero's continued inspiration to others to work for peace and justice is evident in a public Facebook page, Monsenor Oscar Arnulfo Romero. The trust also has a page. How important Romero is as a symbol of truth is the fact that in 2010 the United Nations set 24 March aside as the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims
The powerful feature film 'Romero' is moving and unsettling to this day. The DVD of this film is available for loan to schools and other bona fide patrons of the Catholic Resource Centre, Bathurst, NSW (Australia). The Centre can provide supplier/distributor information to others in Australia or check via TROVE for possible libraries near you that may hold it.
A brief biography on the United Nations site notes that Romero's father apprenticed Romero to a carpenter when he was 13. His young life then is easy to relate to Jesus, the son of a carpenter. The excellent book, 'Romero, a life' by James R Brockman, is held in the Centre's lending collection.
